Computerlinguistik Kolloquium
Master and advanced Bachelor Seminar (Laura Kallmeyer)
Thursday 14.30-16.00, webex. (Maybe on campus will be possible later in the semester, but probably not.)
Course description
This seminar features a series of invited talks presenting current research in computational linguistics. Each talk is preceded by a session where papers preparing the respective talks are discussed.
The talks are public; anybody interested is invited to join!
For the exact program, see the course website.

Parsing Sommer 2021
Web site of the course (with links to the slides): https://user.phil.hhu.de/kallmeyer/teaching/parsing-sommer-2020/
Parsing is a central task in natural language processing. Its goal is to compute the syntactic structures of sentences. Such a syntactic structure could either be a constituency structure or a dependency structure. The former is in many cases taken to be generated by a context-free grammar (CFG). Consequently, constituency parsing amounts to a) implementing/inducing a context-free grammar and b) using this grammar for parsing. Dependency parsing, in contrast to this, is mostly grammar-less parsing using machine-learning techniques.
In this course, we will mainly concentrate on step b) of CFG-based constituency parsing. We will revise various symbolic parsing algorithms that yield, given a CFG and an input sentence, the set of all parse trees for this sentence. In the second half of the course, we will move on to probabilistic parsing, covering Viterbi parsing and weighted deductive parsing with A* estimates.
For references see the slides of the individual sessions.

HA-Bewertung: Es gibt jeweils max.
0 = keine Abgabe,
1 = nichts erkennbar sinnvolles abgegeben,
2 = Ansätze sind richtig,
3 = ca. Hälfte richtig,
4 = sehr großer Teil richtig,
5 = alles richtig

Advanced Natural Language Processing with Python
This class covers advanced programming concepts and their implementation in Python. The class is mostly focused on practical issues and is aimed at the following groups:
- Students who have successfully completed the introduction to programming in computational linguistics with Python and are looking to deepen their programming skills.
- Students who are in the process of preparing for a bachelor’s thesis that includes practical programming tasks or an internship.
- Students who are interested in pursuing a master’s degree in computational linguistics or a related field.
- Students who want to refresh their Python skills or fill existing gaps in their knowledge.
This class builds upon the topics of the introductory class. You can find all materials from the latest instalment of that class here (in German).
We will be meeting online for synchronous lectures and supervised lab sessions. To earn a Beteiligungsnachweis (passing grade), you will be completing practical assignments throughout the semester. The optional Abschlussprüfung (graded exam) will take the shape of a practical project with a written report.
